It can be hard when renovating a kitchen to work out what colours to spread across the cabinets and how to blend them with other kitchen elements such as the flooring, splashback, and countertops. To help inspire your new kitchen cupboard design, consider the following ideas.
Add Warm Browns
Another design option is to generate a cosy kitchen by installing cabinetry in rich espresso, chocolate, or caramel shades. However, while deep browns and mahoganies evoke intimacy, such dark hues can make a kitchen appear smaller. This effect is perfect if you want to personalise a larger kitchen and imbue it with warmness. Though, you may prefer pale-hued cupboards that reflect light to evoke a sense of openness and space in a small room.
Incorporate Splashes of Colour
All-white kitchens create a fresh look, but they can feel dull or sterile. You can rescue such designs with a splash of vibrant colour. To avoid overkill, limit the brightness to selected cupboards while leaving the others neutral. For example, install navy, turquoise, avocado green, or lemon lower cabinets — and white upper cupboards. Another approach is to give the kitchen island special treatment with a bright hue, while colouring the perimeter cabinets white, grey, or black. Save the darker colour for the lower doors to anchor the design — the reverse can produce a top-heavy effect.
Focus on Texture
In the designs in which the lower or island cabinets remain the highlight, the other neutrally toned surfaces form a backdrop. But that doesn't mean they need to be dull. Different materials and texture changes across the surfaces can free them from blandness. For example, the upper cabinetry could be white timber, the splashback could consist of white subway tiles and the benchtop could be white-veined marble. While all the surfaces share similar tones, the textures and finishes fluctuate, adding interest. The tones won't overwhelm the kitchen — nor are they boring because of the diverse materials.
Ditch the Handles
Repetitive cabinet handles across a sea of doors interrupt the smoothness of the surface. You could get rid of hardware altogether by installing push-open and soft-close doors. One possibility is to fit cupboards with a recessed groove along the top that serves as a handle. These doors will be free of protrusions, maintaining a smooth, streamlined, minimal look.
