Frosted vs Clear Glass Shower Screen: 4 Key Considerations for Your Wet Room

by Edwin Johnston

If you want to install a shower screen to create a wet room enclosure within your bathroom, one of the key decisions you'll need to make is whether to use clear glass or frosted glass.

Here are just four considerations that you need to take into account.

1. Size of Space

Wet rooms are often used in smaller bathrooms. If space is at a premium, you're likely to be better off going for a clear glass screen. Clear glass helps a room seem larger since it doesn't cut off any sight lines. While frosted glass will stop your eyes right at the screen, clear glass will ensure that you can see the whole room clearly from end to end. If you do have a larger bathroom to work with, frosted glass can be a little nicer since it creates a more intimate feel while you're showering and prevents the bathroom feeling to cavernous.

2. Amount of Light

One of the biggest problems with bathrooms can be a lack of light. After all, the need for privacy will mean that large windows are often a mistake. If your bathroom is quite dark, clear glass will be advantageous since light will be able to penetrate every corner and there won't be any shadows. Frosted glass can make the space behind the screen feel a little too dim, although they can be nice if you have a light source, such as a skylight, right above the shower.

3. Cleaning Demands

Nobody likes cleaning, and cleaning the bathroom can be a particularly unpleasant task. Unfortunately, all shower screens will need to be cleaned eventually, and cleaning the large expanse of glass required to create a wet room enclosure can take plenty of time and elbow grease. When it comes to cleaning, picking between frosted glass and clear glass can be tricky. Clear glass shower screens will generally need to be cleaned more regularly since they show marks far more easily; just a single shower will be enough to ruin the pristine finish that cleaning achieved. Frosted glass screens will conceal those marks more effectively. On the other hand, clear glass is generally smoother, making cleaning quicker and easier. Additionally, the fact that marks show up more clearly means that you won't miss them.

4. Need for Privacy

Finally, consider how much privacy you need while you're washing yourself. If it's only you using the bathroom, this probably won't be an important concern. However, even the most confident of people sometimes like to have a little bit of privacy when they're showering, so it can be nice to clean yourself without feeling exposed if your partner wants to shave or do their makeup while you wash.
