Help! Which Type of Blind Is Right for My Home?

by Edwin Johnston

When looking for window blinds the choice can seem overwhelming; with so many options available it can be difficult to know which option is best for your home. A little knowledge can go a long way, so knowing a little about the different types of blinds can help make the right choice when searching for new window dressings for your home.

Vertical Blinds:

Vertical blinds are made up of vertical slats that can be adjusted in order to change the level of light being let into the room, or the privacy afforded to those inside it. Additionally, vertical blinds can be drawn to the side, which offers a quick option to both fully open and close the blinds. Easy to operate, less prone to attract dust than those blinds with horizontal slats, and available in a wide range of materials - including those that reduce glare and are fire retardant - vertical blinds are a great option for those looking for their blinds to perform multiple functions.

Roller Blinds:

Roller blinds consist of a single sheet of fabric that is wrapped around a tube situated above the window; this fabric can then be lowered or raised by using a cord situated at the side of the blind, making them very easy to operate. These blinds are available in a variety of fabrics, with the many blackout options available making them a great choice for those looking to blackout all the external light coming into a room. It is worth noting, however, that the cord of some roller blinds can prove dangerous for toddlers or young children, with cases of them becoming wrapped around a child's neck. It is therefore prudent to be aware of this when placing a blind somewhere easily accessible to children.

Venetian Blinds:

Venetian blinds are formed from horizontal metal slats, with different width of slat available. These slats can be adjusted using a tilt rod to change the amount and direction of light coming into a room, or raised and lowered fully by using a cord. The multiple ways the slats can be positioned make these blinds perfect for those looking to frequently change the level of light in a room, or the amount of privacy given by the blinds.

Roman Blinds:

Roman blinds are a good choice for those looking to save energy on heating their home, as they are snugly fitted into the window, as well as being available in thermal fabrics. These blinds are comprised of material that folds upwards in the window, and are operated by a sidewinder chain. Roman blinds are often chosen for their ability to be easily adjusted to block out the sunlight entering a room.

Choosing blinds for a home is a personal choice, with the style and interior design of the home also forming an essential part of the decision making process but, for many people, knowing the main benefits of the different types of window blinds available can make the decision significantly easier.
