Adding Hidden Storage Space in Your Home

by Edwin Johnston

There are few of us who couldn't do with more storage capacity in our homes. The trouble with many storage solutions on sale in Australia today is that they take up space themselves. For example, a typical stand-alone wardrobe might mean that you can tuck away your shirts, coats and dresses, but they often take up floor space, too—often the most valuable commodity in a smaller house or apartment. When seeking additional storage, look for 'hidden stowaways' that afford you extra room for household items in places that already exist in the home, but without their contents being on show.

Under Bench Storage

Kitchen diners are often found in smaller homes where there is insufficient room for a dedicated dining area. One of the most practical means of seating everybody at a kitchen diner table comfortably is to opt for bench seating. In terms of storage, benches offer a great advantage because they can be used to hold containers or drawers, ideal for stowing away your crockery, linen and other essentials such as cutlery and condiments.

Use the Space Under Stairs

Many stairwells have a cupboard beneath them which is accessed by a single door, but this storage space is rarely optimised. If you can squeeze a vacuum cleaner and a few household cleaning products in yours, but little more, then rip out the false wall underneath the stairs and make the whole spaces accessible for storage. Where the stairs are low to the ground, you can even convert steps to act like miniature drawers for smaller items to be tucked away out of sight.

Bedroom Storage

Bedrooms are often dumping grounds for items which don't have proper places to be stored elsewhere in the home. Bedsteads and bed frames are the best for homes with limited storage because it is possible to lay items underneath them. However, if you prefer a divan-style bed, then opt for one where the frame lifts up and locks into position so that you can access storage space under the mattress. Such beds are easy to lift and put back down when fitted with a simple hydraulic lever. What's more, when the mattress is in its downward position, you wouldn't ever know that there is a large storage area hidden away under it.

Door Stowing Systems

The back of a door is the perfect place to hang items like dressing gowns, but with the addition of a rail, you can use the back of cupboard door to store things like shoes, handbags and even jewellery. Pegs and hook are great for smaller items which might otherwise simply get shoved into a chest of drawers making it easier to see all of the items you might want to get ready at a glance.
